“Zipper’ mergeing starts from Aug 1 in HZ

Passing through the heavy traffic can make one headache, especially when cars are merging and each of them are trying to zoom ahead for early pass.

From Aug 1, drivers in Hangzhou shall abide by a new traffic regulation of “merging late and passing fast”, and any driver who violates the rule gets a fine, the same as in Shanghai, Shenzhen or Suzhou, which have adopted the method for years.

This so-called “zipper” method came from the idea of a zipper’s teeth — When two lanes are narrowed to only one, cars should take turns filling in equally. So far, it has proved the most effective with merging while reducing congestion.
