The Xiamen development and reform commission recently issued a document listing the 20th group of municipal infrastructure programs – and a new construction project for an island opera house was included, adding to the East China Sea New City cultural and physical public architecture complex plan.
Involving an investment of 437 million yuan ($65.55 million), the island opera house is scheduled to be located on Bingzhou Island, with a total construction area of 34,800 square meters that can accommodate 5,000 outdoor seats.
The construction work will reportedly start at the end of the current year and be completed by December 2024.
Apart from the opera house, the East China Sea New City cultural and physical public architecture complex plan also lays out resort hotels, the Xiamen Art Gallery and other architectural landmarks.
Xiamen is not the first city to come up with the idea to build an opera house on an island.
Zhuhai Opera House is considered China’s first island opera house. In addition, Shenzhen city in South China’s Guangdong province also plans to construct the same kind of opera house.
