Slow walking trails can make life “slow down” and are an effective way to integrate humans with nature and the city. The reporter learned from the Eco-city Administrative Committee a few days ago that in order to better build a greenway brand, improve vitality of public spaces and happiness index of residents, the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city will “micro-update” the existing urban greenway system. Through preliminary research, planning and design, the Eco-city will start the construction of a 32.1-kilometer linear green corridor system, which will connect the distinctive sea, lake, river, and city views, and open up a new model featuring “from green space to green space” life and tourism to allow citizens to enjoy “green benefits”.
32.1 kilometers of green roads will be “micro-updated”.
The reporter learned that the Eco-city focuses on the construction of a slow-moving system. The density of pedestrian walkways and greenways in the community planned for the Eco-city is 9.4 kilometers per square kilometer, which is far greater than the road network density of 4.3 kilometers per square kilometer for motor vehicles. In the Eco-city, the slow-moving system is spread across residential communities, commercial facilities, and open landscape spaces, forming a vibrant slow-moving network. In the “Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city Greenway System Special Plan” compiled in 2017, the Eco-city also planned 6 special routes with different themes, including coastal bird watching, river and lake sightseeing, and marine recreation, etc. to make greenways an important resource for living and tourism.
In order to better utilize functions of greenways and build regional brands, the Eco-city has conducted a “comprehensive physical examination” of the existing greenway system around two key indicators of line accessibility and beautiful landscape, and divided it into three categories: excellent, good, and inadequate. According to the status quo of greenways, the Eco-city aims to serve urban and rural residents and improve the living environment, closely follows the concept of green and livable city construction, and determines the first-phase greenway planning and renovation plan. The first phase of the greenway reconstruction project is bounded by Ji Canal in the northwest, Yongding New River in the south, Impression Seawall and Shell Beach Wetland Park in the east, with a planned area of about 26 square kilometers and a total length of about 32.1 kilometers. For the “excellent basic” greenways with good road conditions and the road width basically meeting the requirements, such as the greenways in Nandi Park, Impression Seawall, Ganlu River, Relict Avenue, etc., the Eco-city will simply upgrade them, set up unified ecological LOGO in the green roads, and divide the bicycle riding and slow walking roads. Aiming at some “good foundation” greenways in Jinghu, Ji Canal section, Yongdingzhou Park and other areas, the Eco-city will upgrade and transform the existing landscape, so that the plant style can better show a good ecological base. In response to some roads under construction with “inadequate foundations”, while speeding up road construction, the Eco-city has carefully designed greenway landscapes to create a people-oriented slow-moving system. The project will start in September this year, and it is planned to be completed next year.
Creating an upgraded version of the greenway system
According to Sun Yupei, deputy director of the Eco-city Construction Bureau, the greenway planning of the Eco-city will improve the quality of urban public spaces and the happiness index of residents by building brands, linking greenways, and gathering life recreation.
“Building Brand” means to fully integrate the logo and IP with Eco-city characteristics into the greenway construction, such as strengthening the greenway logo at entrance signs, ground, outdoor amusement facilities, etc., to create a recognizable and memorable city space. “Linking Green Road” is to connect the 32.1 kilometers of green roads within the planned range, and to achieve full connectivity to the green road system in terms of footpath routes, pavements, signs, facilities and greening, so as to build a perfect, unobstructed and accessible greenway system with comfortable and energetic slow-travel network. The concept of “gathering life recreation” of the Eco-city Trail is to add service stations, public restrooms, sports venues and other service facilities and rest node spaces in the greenway, providing a place for citizens to get close to nature and tourists to experience sightseeing. The greenway system will also be connected with surrounding communities to create a tour mode of “from green space to green space” to realize the harmonious integration of man and nature.
Combined with the construction of regional smart cities, the Eco-city will also intelligently upgrade the greenway system, relying on smart parking, smart security, smart lighting, environmental monitoring and other modules to enable the greenway system to provide better services for citizens to travel.
Constructing “One Ring + One Corridor + One Lake” Greenway Space
The Eco-city has a beautiful natural environment, characteristic scenery and an ecological base that blends water and greening. This greenway planning and design fully considers the regional natural environment and integrates the greenway system into the three ecological backgrounds of the ocean, rivers & lakes and the city, forming a “One Ring + One Corridor + One Lake” greenway space structure to create a beautiful space that is close to nature while protecting the environment.
The “One Ring” is the multi-style and characteristic landscape ring, which mainly includes the Nandi Coastal Trail Park Section, Impression Seawall Section, Yiou Avenue Section, Ganlu River Section, Central Avenue Connection Section, Sino-Singapore Friendship Park Section, Old Road River Section, Jiyun Canal Section, Yongdingzhou Park section, etc.; “One Corridor” refers to the urban life experience corridor, mainly for the ecological valley section; “One Lake” refers to the river and lake sightseeing area, mainly for the Jinghu River section. Based on the spatial structure of the greenway and characteristics of the landscape along the route, the greenway system as a whole will present the seven themes of seawall tide watching, coastal bird watching, canal wetland, river bay style, ecological green valley, cultural green corridor and green lake sightseeing, which can systematically demonstrate unique natural scenery of the Eco-city.
The greenway system will become an important iconic landscape of the Eco-city and an effective carrier for leisure and entertainment, fitness sports, tourism and viewing functions, so that citizens can enjoy tangible “green benefits”, enhance their sense of happiness, and promote the creation of an Eco-city model featuring “walking and cycling friendly city”.
