Xiamen officials discourage consumption of raw seafood

Local health authorities recently called for consumers to minimize the consumption of items such as raw seafood and to avoid dining at establishments with poor sanitary conditions.

Officials said that the local incidence of intestinal infectious diseases tends to peak in the summer and may be linked to bacteria ingested in uncooked or undercooked seafood.

Authorities added that summertime algal blooms known as red tides, which typically occur between April and June, can make locally-sourced shellfish unfit for human consumption.
